In this Lesson, the very basics of the guitar will be taught. if you know some guitaring you might take this lesson as childish, but this lesson is essential I am assuming that you have a guitar, and you are currently holding it. If not, then go buy one.
Lets Start
The acoustic Guitar basically consists of two parts, the head and the fretboard.
The head
This consists of 6 tuning keys. The style of the head is also the signature and trademark of the Company which has made the guitar. For Example FENDER has a inverted E-shaped head. There is nothing much to learn about the head.
The fretboard
This is the main piece of the guitar. This is the long neck with dots and strips. It is divided into 21, 22 or 22 parts variably for different models. Each part is called the fret. Frets are numbered. The first Fret is towards the neck and the last towards the Sound hole.
The Strings
The Strings are just above the frets. They are numbered with the thinnest as string one and the thickest as 6.
Enough about parts. Lets move to the Music
Music
Plucking
Stricking a string with a Plectrum or with fingers is called Plucking. A Plectrum is a piece of metal or plastic which is used to pluck.
Now, enough definitions. Lets start with only the right hand. leave your left hand free. I want you to Pluck the First String (Thinnest String) continuosly. But the gap between two notes should be constant. Now if you can do this for 30 seconds continuous with the gap between notes being 1 second, you're good.
Now Try these
1. Playing Alternative First String And Second String, with gap of 1 second.
2. Playing The 6th, then 5th, then 4th, then 3rd and repeating this for 30 seconds. (This may not sound good music, but this practice)
Everyday, when you get up, practice this and gradually decrease the gap until you can play very fast.
Lets move to the left hand
Fingering
In this section, you will be taught what to do with the left hand. As you can see, you can generate 6 notes without using the left hand, one in each of the strings. The left Hand is used to Increment the note to make it sharper.
String one
OK, Strike String one. You get the note E. Now lace your first finger in the first fret like this, and press hard.
(Notice that i have placed my finger closer towards the metal partition, but not on the metal. This ensures that a rich note is sounded.) Now Strike the string. you may not get a rich note on the first try. if you are, good. if not press harder and strike. and dont let go untill the trill has ended. You're hand might have got a mark and it might also be paining. but dont worry. the more you pain, the better your fingers get used to the guitar strings. This note is called F. Now you have two natural notes in the first string. E and F. Practice by Alternating between this notes in a steady rythm.
The G note. In the same way. place your Third Finger in the third fret and strike (notice i'm not saying the second fret which is F# which is not a natural note).
Congrats, You know the first string.
Here are some simple tunes you can play with the first string.
1. E F E F, G F G F, E F G F, E - E -
2. G F G F E - E -, E F G F ,E---
String 2,3
Now That you have learnt fingering string one. the rest are just the same. only for the thicker strings, you have to have a harder grip.
In String two, fret zero or open string is the B, The first fret is C and the Third is D.
In String Three, fret zero is G, fret 2 is A.
These notes should be memorized.
A good exercis for this is: open a book. read the first line of the first page. If any of the Letters from A to G comes Play it. It should be fast. After you are fast enough you can play these.
